What’s in store for the next generation

Curriculum and quality leader for photography at New College Lanarkshire in Motherwell, Lewis Napier, has been a photographer for over 30 years. Every year he continues to be impressed with the new talent coming through the college. The students from this year have already collected a number of awards:

“We have a great team of students from Access to HND level. The HN level picked up 62 awards from a total of 64 at the Master Photographers Association, including Student Photographer of the Year. We have literally just sent the images to the BIPP Awards for 2019, so we are hopeful we may pick up a few more awards.”

Part of becoming a professional photographer is learning to appreciate the power of print. Lewis believes printed images still remain the best way to present images, but acknowledges digital files are crucial for student photographers:

“I believe you can tell more about a photographer, professional or student, by looking at their images on a print as opposed to a digital file. Nothing beats the look of a good quality print. Having said that, in the world of education, having digital files as a hand-in for an assignment does save the learner an expense in the early months.”

Lewis’ tip for becoming a professional photographer is to print with a professional lab:

“This is a no-brainer. Being able to survive in the world of photography, you need to have something that says you are one of the best at what you do. Quality prints do that.”

At New College Lanarkshire, lecturers promote professional printing as the best business strategy because they know that’s the way to impress clients:

“That is why we spend so much time making sure that students know good prints from bad. To this end, that is why we bring all our students to Loxley Colour, to let them see exactly what they are paying for. Each time we leave Loxley Colour, the reaction is always the same; the set-up, professionalism and quality of work is amazing.”

Year after year, the photography industry continues to grow and evolve. Lewis is confident the next generation of photographers will continue to be innovative and create stunning images for others to admire:

“I can still be amazed by a piece of work shown by students and that is why I love my profession. I think the future of photography is in very safe hands and there is a new breed of photographer at the helm. The future is technology, and what it brings with it.”
